Shared Hosting
This is the most popular form of web hosting and also the least expensive. Your website files are hosted on the same server as a number of other websites.

Shell Access
This provides access to web servers via FTP, POP3 and SSH.

SMTP
Simple Mail Transfer Protocol - This is a protocol for sending email messages across the internet.

SQL
Structured Query Language - This is a database query and programming language widely used for accessing, querying, updating, and managing data in relational database systems.

SSI
Server Side Includes - These are often used to add external "common" pieces of code which are used on a number of pages such as headers or footers.

SSL
This is mostly used where confidential information such as credit card numbers are transferred from a browser to a server.

Sub-domain
These created under domain names. Many free webhosts you to use a sub-domain to host a website. Example you could create a sub-domain called "mine" on the domain mysite.com and it would become mine.mysite.com

TCP/IP
Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol.

Telenet
A protocol that enables an Internet user to log on to and enter commands on a remote computer linked to the Internet, as if the user were using a text-based terminal directly attached to that computer. Telnet is part of the TCP/IP suite of protocols.

TLD
Top Level Domain. Example .com or .net

Traffic
Basically, how many visitors you get to your website.

UNIX
A multi-user, multitasking operating system that exists in various forms and implementations, typically used on proprietary computer workstations. A Web servers run on UNIX systems.

Upload
To upload means to transfer files or other data from your computer to the web server that hosts your website.

URL
Uniform Resource Locator - An address that uniquely identifies a location on the Internet. Example http://mysite.com/page5.html

Virtual Hosting
When you are hosting multiple domains on a single server, each domain being hosted is referred to as a virtual domain. A single IP address is shared between multiple domains.

Virtual Private Server
This provides the features of a dedicated server even though the server is shared by other web hosting customers.

Web Space
The amount of disc space that you are allowed to use on the web server.

Webmaster
The person who is responsible for maintaining a website.

WHOIS
This is a central database which tracks new and existing domain name registrations.

What You See Is What You Get.

XML
eXtensible Linking Language - this is planned to be the successor of HTML.
