What is dedicated web hosting?

Unlike shared web hosting plans, which put a number of customers onto a single server, a dedicated server is reserved exclusively for the use of a single customer. The main advantage of this is that due to the dedicated server customer having exclusive use of the server's bandwidth, memory and storage space - the performance will not be affected by traffic and usage of other customers.

With a dedicated server you have the power to customize it any way you like. It is your choice which operating system to run (such as Red Hat Linux, FreeBSD, or Windows). You can also install any extra programs you might require (such as ASP or ColdFusion).

The management of the server can usually be provided by the hosting company as an extra service if required.

The advantages of dedicated servers hosting

  • You can choose which operating system you want to use on the server.
  • You can add unlimited domains, subdomains, Pop3 accounts, MySQL databases and FTP accounts.
  • It is more secure than shared or VPS hosting.

The disadvantages of dedicated servers hosting

  • The cost will be too high for small web sites.
  • You don't own the server.
